ECVM and Other Congenital Spinal Anomalies

Course Description

The current controversy within the equine industry regarding the C6 caudal ventral lamina has brought to light the issue of congenital vertebral anomalies and their perceived clinical relevance. This congenital anomaly is just one of many that have been reported in animals, some of which are fatal deformities and others that do not seem to cause any noticeable disability. In this webinar, Dr. Haussler discusses what is currently known about Equine Complex Vertebral Malformation (ECVM) and provides an objective, clinical perspective based on what is known about other similar congenital anomalies in horses. A brief overview of the anatomic and clinical features of other common vertebral malformations is provided. He proposes a check list of actions that need to be taken to obtain more clarity on the ECVM issue.

Veterinary Compendium devoted the whole month of October to ECVM – please read the blog and watch the replays of the two Community Gatherings to learn more about differential diagnosis of ECVM and some management approaches for ECVM-diagnosed horses. The program was developed in consultation with other professionals invested in the ECVM topic.
