Pain is one of the most common clinical signs associated with musculoskeletal injuries in horses. Unfortunately, identifying the presence and location of pain can be one of the practitioner’s most challenging tasks. In this webinar, Dr. Haussler will review the basic pain mechanisms and discuss the pros and cons of the common methods used to assess and score pain in horses. Unwanted or dangerous behavior are not due to a bad horse, but rather often due to chronic pain that has not been recognized or managed by the associated human. Being aware of subtle changes in behavior is critical in preventing the development of chronic pain syndromes that are very difficult to treat. Important differences in measuring acute versus chronic musculoskeletal pain as it relates to treatment and rehabilitation will also be discussed.
